PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) is a State Owned Indonesia in organizing train transport services. PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) includes passenger and goods transport. At the end of March 2007, DPR passed the revised Law. 13/1992 which states that private investors and regional governments were given the opportunity to manage the rail transportation services in Indonesia.

On 14th August 2008, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) made the separation of Greater Jakarta division into PT Kereta Api Commuter Jabotabek (KCJ) to manage rail commuters in Jakarta and surrounding areas. during the year 2008 the number of passengers exceeds 197 million.

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) operates trains in the province of Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, South Sumatra and Lampung and all provinces in Java.

These main routes connecting the city with Rantauprapat Medan, Padang Pariaman, Bandar Lampung with Lubuklinggau and Palembang, Surabaya via Jakarta and Semarang, Yogyakarta and Surabaya and Malang and Banyuwangi.

Overall length of railway line in Indonesia is 7583 kilometers. More than 2500 kilometers of track had been closed, most of it is the branch lines that are not considered profitable when it is used. In 2008, Department of Transportation is conducting a dual-channel development in Java, which is expected to be completed by 2025. The path has been completed is the Jakarta-Cirebon, Cikampek-Purwakarta, Kutoarjo-Surakarta and Tegal, Brebes, Surabaya-Malang. At this pathway Brebes-Pemalang, Kutoarjo-Kroya and Kroya-Prupuk being worked on.
